Indian students are increasingly focusing on the long-term outcomes of studying abroad. Instead of choosing foreign universities only for their reputation, students are giving greater importance to employment opportunities, career growth and the overall return on their education investment.
According to a report, around 49% of Indian students said better job opportunities were the primary reason for choosing to study abroad.
Better Jobs Emerge as the Top Priority
The findings come from the international education report by upGrad, a skills and workforce development company. Apart from better employment opportunities, students also identified quality of education, the desire to settle abroad permanently and lifestyle as other important reasons for studying overseas.
The report noted that Indian students are no longer making study-abroad decisions solely on the basis of the reputation of an institution. They are increasingly evaluating the benefits they can receive compared with the cost of education, employment prospects and long-term career opportunities.
Report Based on 53,800 Students
The report is based on information from 53,800 students who sought counselling between January 2025 and June 2026. Of these, 65.8% were fresh graduates, while around 60% came from small and mid-sized cities.
Most of the students covered in the report were at the beginning of their careers and had recently completed their undergraduate degrees.
Europe Gains Popularity
Traditional study destinations such as the US, UK, Canada and Australia continue to remain important, but European countries are witnessing growing interest among Indian students.
According to the report, amid stricter immigration rules and rising costs, students are increasingly considering countries such as Germany, Finland, Spain and France. Lower costs, industry-oriented education and better employment opportunities are among the factors making these destinations attractive.
Focus on Study Options Under ₹30 Lakh
The report also highlights a growing focus on cost-effective study-abroad options. Around seven out of 10 students are planning to study abroad with a total budget of less than ₹30 lakh.
Praneet Singh, Vice President of University Partnerships at UpGrad Study Abroad, said the study-abroad sector is undergoing a major shift. Indian students are giving greater priority to future employment prospects, career advancement opportunities and lower costs. According to him, the growing popularity of Europe reflects this changing mindset among students.
