Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Chinese President Xi Jinping on September 12, 2026, on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit in New Delhi. Both leaders welcomed the steady progress in India-China bilateral relations since their previous meeting in Tianjin in August 2025.

The two leaders reiterated that India and China should view their relationship from a strategic and long-term perspective. They stressed that differences should not turn into disputes.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the need to follow three principles — mutual respect, mutual sensitivity and mutual interest.
Peace and Stability Along the Border
Prime Minister Modi stressed that peace and stability in border areas are an essential basis for the continued development of bilateral relations.
Both sides emphasized the need to adhere to existing agreements and understandings related to the border issue. The two leaders reiterated their commitment to a fair, reasonable and mutually acceptable resolution of the boundary question.
Trade and People-to-People Relations
The leaders noted progress in people-to-people relations and stressed the need to further promote cultural exchanges, business ties and movement of people between the two countries.
On economic and trade relations, they emphasized the need to address each other's concerns, including structural trade imbalances and supply-chain issues, and to facilitate meaningful and predictable market access.
China’s Support for India’s BRICS Presidency Appreciated
The two leaders agreed to continue expanding areas of mutual understanding on regional and global issues and challenges.

MEA Calls India’s BRICS Year Special
Foreign Ministry Secretary Sudhakar Dalela said the year has been particularly significant for BRICS. India assumed the BRICS chairmanship for the fourth time in January and focused its presidency on building for resilience, innovation, cooperation and sustainability.
He said that more than 350 meetings were held during India's chairmanship across various subjects, ministries, working groups, business sessions and people-centric activities.
Support for UN and Financial Reforms
According to the Ministry of External Affairs, the leaders reiterated their support for comprehensive reforms in the United Nations, greater participation of developing countries and reforms in the international financial architecture.
They also discussed the impact of ongoing conflicts and economic uncertainties and emphasized the importance of dialogue, diplomacy and peaceful resolution of differences.
Discussion on Local Currency Trade Settlement
The Ministry of External Affairs said that discussions on trade settlement in local currencies have been taking place within BRICS for some time.
It described local currency settlement as a practical way to reduce transaction costs in mutual trade.
New Delhi Declaration Accepted by BRICS Members
The New Delhi Declaration presented by India during the BRICS Summit was accepted by all member countries.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the meeting was meaningful and constructive and reflected a shared commitment. He also said that a changing world cannot be governed using old resources. The meeting also emphasized the role of South Asia.
