India, Pakistan and China on the US List
India has been included on the list along with Pakistan and China. The list includes 23 countries identified as major drug transit or major illicit drug-producing countries. It also includes Afghanistan, The Bahamas, Belize, Bolivia, Burma, Colombia, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Jamaica, Laos, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Peru and Venezuela.
What Does Being on the List Mean?
According to the US, a country’s inclusion on the list does not by itself mean that its government has failed to take action against drugs. Countries can be included because of geographic, commercial and economic factors that allow illicit drugs or chemicals used to produce them to be transported or produced.
This can also be the case even when the concerned government has taken strong measures to control narcotics and enforce the law.
