Delhi has made extensive security arrangements for the BRICS Summit scheduled to be held at Bharat Mandapam from September 11 to 13. The movement of foreign delegations, heads of state and senior dignitaries has led to traffic changes and restrictions on several major routes across the city.
Here is what will remain closed and what will remain operational during the summit.
All Schools to Remain Closed on September 11
As per the order of Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu, all government, government-aided and recognised non-government private schools in Delhi will remain closed on Friday, September 11.
Public Holiday for Government Offices
A public holiday has also been declared for Delhi government offices, autonomous bodies and public sector undertakings (PSUs).
The move has been taken to ensure smooth security arrangements and manage traffic during VVIP movement.
Schools and offices are expected to reopen as per their scheduled timings from Monday, September 14, after the weekend.
Banks and Private Offices to Remain Open
The BRICS Summit will not affect banks and private offices in Delhi on September 11. All banks and private offices will remain open.
However, commuters may face difficulties in central Delhi and on restricted routes due to VVIP movement. Companies have been advised that they may offer employees the work-from-home option on September 11.
Delhi Metro Services to Continue
Delhi Metro services are expected to remain largely unaffected during the BRICS Summit and trains will continue to operate.
However, the Delhi Metro Museum at Supreme Court Metro Station will remain closed from September 11 to 13, 2026.
Connaught Place to Remain Open
Connaught Place will remain fully open during the BRICS Summit. Traders have appealed to customers to check the traffic advisory before visiting the area for shopping and dining.
Amit Gupta, Joint Secretary of the New Delhi Traders Association (NDTA), has invited Delhi residents and tourists to visit Connaught Place. Traders said that neither shops nor restaurants and cafes will remain closed.
4,800 Traffic Personnel Deployed
Delhi Police has prepared a comprehensive traffic plan to ensure the safe movement of foreign heads of state and VVIP convoys. Around 4,800 traffic personnel have been deployed across the city for security and traffic management.
Major Routes Likely to Be Affected
During the convoy rehearsals and VVIP movement, traffic will be controlled through 22 identified alternative routes.
Traffic movement may be affected from time to time on more than 35 major roads, including Mathura Road, Sardar Patel Marg, Shanti Path, Janpath, Ashoka Road, Barakhamba Road, Tolstoy Marg, Africa Avenue Road, Niti Marg and APJ Abdul Kalam Road.
Bus routes may also be changed or temporarily controlled if required, while taxi services will continue to operate smoothly.
Delhi Traffic Police has appealed to residents to plan their journeys in advance and check the latest traffic advisory before leaving to avoid inconvenience.
