Liquor Sales Rise Over 15 Times in Gujarat’s GIFT City Despite Prohibition
Gujarat has a prohibition policy on liquor, but liquor sales in the state’s GIFT City have increased sharply over the past year. GIFT City, or Gujarat International Finance Tec-City, recorded the sale of 56,638 litres of Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) between August 2025 and July 2026, according to recently released government figures.
Sales Increased More Than 15 Times in One Year
According to the government data, GIFT City recorded the sale of only 3,716 litres of liquor between August 2024 and July 2025. However, the figure increased to 56,638 litres between August 2025 and July 2026.
This means liquor sales increased by more than 15 times in one year. The sales also generated around Rs 87.39 lakh in revenue for the Gujarat government.
More Than 60,000 Litres Sold in Two Years
Between August 2024 and July 2026, more than 60,354 litres of IMFL were sold in GIFT City.
The total includes 3,716 litres sold between August 2024 and July 2025 and 56,638 litres sold between August 2025 and July 2026.
Together, the figures show that more than 60,000 litres of liquor were sold in GIFT City over the two-year period.
Why Is Liquor Allowed in GIFT City?
GIFT City is being developed as an international-level financial and technology hub. According to the government, companies, investors and technology professionals from India and abroad work there.
The government said that providing a wine-and-dine facility at certain places was necessary to offer them an international-level business environment. This is why liquor sales have been permitted in GIFT City, while prohibition remains in force across the rest of Gujarat.
Special Exemption Granted in December 2023
Liquor prohibition has been in place in Gujarat for a long time. Manufacturing, possessing, selling and consuming liquor are prohibited in the state.
However, in December 2023, the Gujarat government granted a special exemption from prohibition rules for GIFT City.
