UPI payments have made digital transactions easier, but slow internet can sometimes make it difficult to open apps such as Google Pay and PhonePe. The new UPI Tap & Pay feature is aimed at addressing this issue.

The RBI Governor and the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) launched UPI Tap & Pay and MyUPI at the Global Fintech Fest (GFF 2026) in Mumbai. The features aim to make UPI more powerful and robust.
How Will UPI Tap & Pay Work?
UPI Tap & Pay will allow users to make payments without scanning a QR code or opening a UPI app. It works similar to Wi-Fi-enabled debit or credit cards, where the card is tapped on a PoS machine to make a payment.
Users will only need to unlock an NFC-enabled smartphone and bring it close to the merchant’s Point-of-Sale (PoS) machine or smart tag.
The transaction will then be completed using the merchant’s internet connection. This means users will not need to open apps such as Google Pay, PhonePe or Paytm.
The feature can also work in areas with low or no mobile network connectivity, such as basements, mountainous areas and metro stations.
Payments Up to Rs 5,000 Without UPI PIN
NPCI has allowed transactions of up to Rs 5,000 without entering a UPI PIN for small payments. For transactions above this amount, users will have to enter their UPI PIN.
What Is MyUPI?
MyUPI is an AI-powered customer support and control platform. It is based on NPCI’s small language model, FiMI.
The platform aims to provide information about UPI transactions and AutoPay mandates made through different banks and UPI apps in one place.
This means that users with multiple bank accounts or multiple UPI apps will be able to view information about their transactions and AutoPay mandates through MyUPI in one place.
Safety Switch to Block UPI Debits
MyUPI has been launched with a Safety Switch. If a user suspects that their account has been hacked or that fraud has taken place, they can activate the Safety Switch with a single click.
This will immediately block all UPI debits from the account.
